December's pick-
Amazon.com ReviewAmazon Best of the Month, May 2008:
Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm
Warning: If you haven't started the Twilight series. Don't start until you finish Host. (or else you will have to read all four and you won't have time to read this book.)

Ok, so I am a Twilight lover. I have to admit I picked up this book before Jerri selected it hoping to find a bit of Edward. This main man is no Edward, but he is good enough. I don't think he is as well developed but again, I was reading the book really wanting him to be someone else, which wasn't really fair.
To those of you who are just getting started-hang in there. I think the beginning is a little confusing. If you have questions post them here and we can try to clarify each others questions to make the read more enjoyable.
I started the book over, to read it with you all. I hadnt finished it the first time, so I don't know how it ends.
Why would Uncle Jeb keep us alive for this?
A shiver passed through me at the thought. I'd skimmed through the history of human atrocitites. I'd had no stomach for them. Perhaps I should have concentrated better. I knew there were reasons why humans let their enemies live, for a little while. Things they wanted from their minds or their bodies...
Of course it sprang into my head immediately - the one secret they would want from me. The one I could never, never tell them. No matter what they did to me. I would have to kill myself first.
p. 121.
Ok, any speculation as to what that is? The one thing the SOULS dont want the HUMANS to know?
Hey D,
I wondered about the same comment. I had a quick thought that maybe the souls can actually be controlled by strong minded humans and essentially want to be human-like. Of course I'm only a third of the way through so I am sure this will be just a premature idea.
Or....could it be that souls are capable of love and being in love with humans, hmmm...
Yea, that is an intersting thought. The only thing is that The Wanderer seems to be just learning that now so it seems too undeveloped to be the big secret. A
I don't know, I was thinking it must be somehow related to the Souls weakness.
What part are you on? Are they living in the caves yet? I am rereading it so I am not that far along this time, Jared just left to go collect. That is the point where things start to pick up.
The one thing I can say that might be a weakness on the part of the writer is that the soul and human occasionally disagree, but really seem to have the same personality.
Did you put your email in this blog so it will email you updates?
I might bring my laptop to book club so we can all put our emails in and get an email everytime someone makes a comment.
This is a test; anybody have this comment show up in their inbox?
I did not get your last comment to show up in my inbox but I have now clicked the proper box so hopefully the next one will pop up.
I am at the part where 'Wanda' is living in Jared's room and telling the boy (forget his name) stories of her alien life. Does it seem a bit strange that although the humans are very standoffish and hostile towards her, that hardly anyone is questioning her or talking. They seem almost zombie-like. She seems more human than they are. I think I like this character but not entirely sold on her. Hopefully that changes as the book progresses. I defintely look forward to picking it up when I can! Where did you finish last time (page)?
I was about 100 pages from the end...
I finished it! I jumped ahead to where I left off last time. I am happy with the way it turned out. A little cheesy maybe but still...
i have to admit i couldnt get into the host. i skipped around it for a bit and ended up not finishing it. oddly it also kind of took the shimmer off twilight for me, too. or maybe that was the awful movie?! lol. or just that its depressing that i'm done reading them all? who knows...
